Together with existing shareholders, Seaya Ventures, Viking Global Investors and JME Ventures, and leading tech investor Prosus, Pymwymic has completed a $15m Series B funding round for Biome Makers, a market leading provider of soil biology analysis. The investment will be the launching investment of Pymwymic’s Healthy Food Systems Impact Fund II and is set to accelerate the next phase of Biome Makers’ international growth.

Healthy soils are the foundation of a healthy food system and the basis needed in order to achieve many Sustainable Development Goals. Yet in the last 40 years, roughly 1/3 of the world’s arable soil has been lost due to conventional agricultural methods. Soil microbiomes perform a vital role controlling crop health and production, but very little is known about how they function and interact with one another. The biological processes that influence soil quality remain ‘the big unknown’ in understanding soil health.

To tackle this issue, Biome Makers has developed a proprietary Artificial Intelligence technology to identify microbial biomarkers through DNA sequencing in order to understand how soil microbes interact and influence each other. By better understanding these soil microbes and, in turn, better understanding crop needs, growers can boost food production and build efficiencies around crop yields. Biome Makers has spent the last few years building its two core products – BeCrop® and Gheom® – and has built a proof of concept of a third, having recently announced the first AI virtual assistant for sustainable farming in partnership with Bayer Crop Science.

“We are on a mission to restore the health and fertility of soil and develop a more sustainable and respectful way to do agriculture.”

Adrian Ferrero, Co-founder and CEO Biome Makers

This investment will progress the company’s next phase of growth, accelerating the company’s objective to become an industry standard in measuring the health of our soils and the impact of individual crop inputs and farming practices on soil health. Such insights are a necessary ingredient in the transition towards a more sustainable food system and agricultural practices in particular. With impact lying at the core of Biome Makers’ mission, Pymwymic will support management in building and tracking the right proof points in order to push the sector towards more regenerative farming practices.

“With one of the solutions to reverse climate change right under our feet, we are happy to join this pioneer on their journey enabling more sustainable agricultural practices.”

Rogier Pieterse, Managing Director at Pymwymic
