Pymwymic invests in FA Bio’s sustainable ag revolution

Pymwymic is thrilled to announce its investment in FA Bio, a British bio-tech company at the forefront of sustainable agriculture. FA Bio is revolutionising the industry with its discovery of superior microbes for game-changing bio-products to increase crop yields, protect biodiversity, and replace chemical inputs, thereby minimising the environmental impact of agriculture. Pymwymic co-led the £5.3m round alongside Clean Growth Fund, which also included participation from Ship2B Ventures as well as new and existing private investors. The funding will enable FA Bio to commercialise its technology, support ongoing research, and expand its team of experts.

Soil microbes are microscopic organisms that inhabit the soil environment and are vital to supporting its health, yet we know so little about them. Imagine being able to analyse these soil microbes to unlock the secrets of their influence on crop growth, biodiversity protection, and resistance to diseases. FA Bio, the pioneering British bio-tech company, has developed a cutting-edge technology for targeted microbial sampling to gather data and microbial isolates from agricultural fields. This unique approach will lead to the development of game-changing bioproducts for the most vital crops in the global food system.

“Intensive agriculture and overuse of agrochemicals have contributed to a 70% biodiversity loss in the past 50 years, which has been made worse by the damaging effects of climate change. Our innovative technology and game-changing bioproducts have the potential to boost crop productivity and provide a natural alternative to chemical fertilisers, protecting the world’s natural ecosystems.”

Dr Angela de Manzanos Guinot, FA Bio Co-Founder and CEO

Through its proprietary SporSenZ technology, FA Bio has collected a valuable library of superior microbes which have been shown to be 4-6 times more efficient than microbes collected through other discovery methods and which provide a funnel of high-potential candidates for biological product development. By supporting the development of biologicals, FA Bio’s impact directly contributes to a more nature positive and healthier food system, with biologicals acting as a necessary component in the transition towards more regenerative agriculture practices.

“We truly believe FA Bio’s innovative discovery method promises game-changing products for sustainable agriculture. We’re thrilled to welcome the team to our portfolio to support them in their journey of creating greater impact.“

Sophie Pickering, Pymwymic Investment Manager

FA Bio becomes Pymwymic’s fifth portfolio company of the Healthy Food Systems Impact Fund II.

About FA Bio

FA Bio is revolutionising sustainable agriculture with the discovery and development of superior microbial bioproducts, including biocontrols, biostimulants and biofertilisers, that can replace chemical inputs, improve soil health and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. FA Bio has developed a novel approach to discover and collect microbes through its SporSenZ technology. This approach is significantly faster and more effective than alternative approaches, reducing development times to c.18 months from up to 6 years, a game changer for the industry.

Its unique Microbial Discovery Platform includes microbial candidates for disease control, plant growth promotion and biofertiliser activities. With the discovery of microbial active ingredients for bioproducts, FA Bio’s mission is to help minimise agriculture’s environmental impact and restore soil health whilst sustainably increasing crop yields.
